Spamfighting

No, I don't mean hurling chunks of Hormel potted meat at each other. I mean fighting back against the @$$holes who send just-as-offensive pieces of electronic garbage to your emailbox. You know what I mean, the constant stream of ads, usually for get-rich-quick scams, pornographic web sites or chat lines, software with which to send spam yourself, quack medical cures, and assorted other garbage. (To give credit where due, once in a blue moon it's actually for a legitimate product or service, that is not designed specifically to appeal to "prurient interests". But in my experience, that's only about one of every thousand or so spams.)

What you may not know is what a pain it is to the ISP, that it is essentially an unrecognized form of theft of services (and usually also Computer Trespass, and Computer Fraud And Abuse, and often harassment), and that there are several pieces of legislation pending in the U.S. Congress to regulate it, or better yet, to make it flat-out illegal (by extending the "no junk faxes" law to email).

Here are some things I've written about it:

If you send email to commercialemail@murkowski.senate.gov (Senator Frank Murkowski) about spam, here is the autoreply you get back.
