No, that's nothing to do with "evil" -- look at the spelling. Nor is it anything to do with torture, regardless of the word's usage in Pulp Fiction. It is the study, re-enactment, or re-creation of the Middle Ages. No, I don't mean between the prime of life and old age, but rather "days of old, when knights were bold" and all that rot.
There are many organizations devoted to this pursuit. I am a member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). In other related matters, I moderate the Fidonet MEDIEVAL echo, where I am known as Emperor Simon. My official seal:
(For those of you unskilled in decoding emoticons, otherwise known as smilies, that's a smiley with glasses and a crown.)
I have likewise been too busy, for many years, to attend many local SCA events, settling for just going to The Pennsic War (the big annual bash, in mid-August near Pittsburgh) every year. However, I'm even going to have to miss that in 1998 (not enough vacation time left after my honeymoon) and 1999 (going to England instead to see the total solar eclipse). The only other one I've missed since I started going, in 1983, was 1990.
If you want to know how to do something medieval, or at least how it's often done in the SCA, an excellent resource is Stefan's Florigelium.
