Filk: Virtual Monday

by Dave Aronson

This is another one of mine that isn't a parody of something else. On the other claw, it's not entirely an original tune either; you could use a pretty much standard blues chord progression on it....

The story behind it is that at apparently many colleges, and at least dear old CMU (debate rages on whether that's Carnegie-Mellon University, or Crush My Underwear), when classes resume on a Tuesday after vacations, they substitute a Monday schedule of classes. This phenomenon is generally known, at least amongst us "hackers", as a Virtual Monday. (And yes, that was before the term "virtual" meant diddly to the Great Unwashed. Back then, the Internet was still called ARPAnet....)

It's a Virtual Monday and it's got me depressed,
'Cause tomorrow is Wednesday and I can't get no rest.
It's supposed to be a Tuesday,
But they say it's for the best.

Got back from vacation on the Greyhound bus,
And all of my math skills, they have turned to rust.
Got two straight days of lectures,
Lord have pity on us!

Got back to my room and the door was busted down,
And all of my s#!^ was all f#@&ed around.
Still got a quart of vodka,
'Scuse me while I drown!

Sat down in the classroom and I fell asleep,
Go over to the term'nals, hear 'em hum and beep.
They've "migrated" all my files,
It makes me wanna weep!
